What is it about some office cultures that would have us think we need to block ourselves away in our very own cocoon?
The best part about working in an office is the ability to collaborate with our colleagues, getting ideas from each other, and helping one another out. How can we help develop a positive office culture so that our time at the office doesn’t need to be spent locked away in a plastic bubble?
We tend to assume that a culture is something we're born into, but it is more than that. Culture is also the beliefs and values of a company, which in turn dictates the behaviour of people within that environment. In other words, culture is something that can be created and is a major factor in how the office conducts itself.
Creating a positive office culture is no easy task, but it can be done. Whether you are a manager or the office junior or somewhere in between, here are some things that you can do, to help create that positive
Give encouragement – if you can see those who you work with are slaving away at their job and they seem unappreciated, then be the one who says ‘you are awesome’ or ‘well done’. Go the extra mile to say thanks when they do something for you.
Treat each other with respect and dignity – most workplaces have some standards for how employees are to interact with each other (even if they are unspoken guidelines!) Think about how you treat your colleagues and respect their opinion and treat each other with dignity. Don’t bully and harass each other. Be careful to avoid taking part in office gossip!
Be flexible – as far as possible be flexible when working with each other. We understand that most people have busy schedules and deadlines to meet, but try and fit in with each other’s plans as best you can.
Communicate – keeping a two way communication going with your colleagues is important so that misunderstandings can be avoided, which inevitably lead to a negative office culture.
Don’t take it personally - Don’t be scared to contribute your ideas and be happy that those around you won’t always agree. Take on board others’ comments because sometimes it is good for us to get another perspective, it helps us to grow.
Finally, work outside the bubble - not in one!
