What is it about job advertisement mumbo jumbo? Employers almost expect you to have an English/Job dictionary on hand. It is stressful enough applying for a job without trying to play interpreter too!
Let’s have a look at what employers are really looking for.
Attention to detail – Are you prone to silly mistakes (including typos) or do you notice the small things?
Excellent communication skills – We all communicate, but how well do you give and receive instructions? What about your listening and questioning abilities, and reading the non-verbal cues of others, especially if you are applying for a customer facing role?
Team work – This is more than just working with others to get the job done. How well do you accept and value the opinions of others, especially when they are opposing? What strategies do you use to build a team culture, where everyone’s input is important?
Fast-paced, dynamic environment – If you are after a nine to five job with an hour for lunch, then this job is not for you. Expect to put in over and above to achieve in this type of role.
Self-starter – If motivation and initiative are your key drivers then this role may be your thing. Employers are looking for people who use every last second of downtime to keep themselves busy without having to be supervised each and every second of the day. Remember also that these types of roles usually have a lot of autonomy and give you the ability to make decisions for yourself.
Happy to pitch in – Is any job or task too tedious for you? If so, this may not be the job for you. However, if you are willing to assist the team across a broad range of tasks, with a happy demeanour, then let the employer know that no job is too hard or menial.
Ability to learn quickly – How well do you adapt to change? This is not a job that comes with boredom and don’t expect to have your hand held. What is expected? - Ask questions, take notes and just get on with the job!
Hit the ground running – No time for slackers or to get acquainted with the minutiae of the role, you better be fully qualified and be up to speed almost immediately.
